HRCA supports a large number of homeschooling families in Hampton Roads! Many of our staff are also experienced homeschoolers, so we know how important quality programming and cost are to you. HRCA offers chess programs through homeschool co-ops and our own Homeschool Chess Club on Friday mornings. The cost to participate at HRCA is among the cheapest homeschooling offerings available – only $10/week per student for homeschool chess AND you get access to the #1 chess website for kids at almost 70% off retail!
Homeschool Co-Ops
Homeschool co-ops may contact us to inquire about adding chess to their vast offerings! As with other school chess programs, HRCA utilizes certified, trained, and background-checked coaches to teach. We are fully equipped to teach, supervise casual play clubs, and run tournaments. About the Homeschool Chess Club
This is a casual club hosted by HRCA (no rec center membership is required). A certified HRCA chess coach will be onsite, but there will not be formal instruction. Knowledge of chess basics or enrollment in a beginner chess class is a requirement to participate. Equipment is provided!
Club is open to homeschoolers ages 5 – teens who already know the basics of chess, or are enrolled in or Learn to Play/Beginner class. This is not a drop-off club – parents should remain onsite.
Sessions
Friday mornings 9:30-10:30am.
Fall session (12 weeks): 9/12 -12/12. (no club 11/14, 11/28)
Winter Session (12 weeks): 1/9 – 4/3 (there will be 1 maintenance week closure in March – TBD)
Spring Session (8 weeks): 4/17 – 6/5
Tuition & Fees
We know that finding quality enrichment activities for homeschoolers can be expensive. We charge the same tuition as our school-based programs — only $10 per student per week — and also offer free monthly payment plans! This fee covers our staffing, facility rental, and other expenses related to facilitating the club.
The cost for a 12-week session of homeschool chess is only $120/semester (+ $20 registration fee) Tuition now includes HRCA Youth membership through 8/31/26 and a ChessKid Gold premium online subscription (a $60 value!).
Register EARLY! Standard Registration closes 9/8 for Fall session. Late registrations may be accepted up to the 2nd week of the session if space is available, with a $40 registration fee.
Payments
HRCA requires autopay for tuition and registration fees. We will charge the non-refundable $20 Registration Fee per student to the account on file within 72 hours of sign enrollment, unless already paid through the Parent/Student Portal. Tuition is billed via autopay to account on file the 1st of the month, beginning on September 1st. There are no refunds once payment is processed.
Tuition is posted to your Parent/Student Portal approximately one week before payment is due. To avoid autopay, you may log into your Parent/Student Portal and make your own payment early. Otherwise, HRCA will process payments on the 1st. Because we are already offering this at a low price, we do not have any sibling discounts available. We only charge Scholarship families their Registration Fee and co-pay amount.
We have limited financial assistance available, including payment plans, scholarships, and waivers, reserved for students with demonstrated financial need. If this applies to you, or you just need a monthly payment plan for tuition, please complete our Financial Assistance Application HERE. Tuition is not charged for your class until your scholarship application is processed and a co-pay (if any) is determined.
Withdrawals/Refunds
Withdrawals: If you wish to withdraw, please contact us via email at hrca@hrchessclub.org or use the Drop Request in your Parent Portal by the 15th of the month for the month ahead. Verbal withdrawal notices will NOT be accepted.
Failing to notify HRCA after the 15th will result in your account being charged if you are on payment plan. There are no refunds once payments are processed. There are no refunds for missed sessions or failure to notify HRCA.
Enrollment in all classes are subject to HRCA’s Policies, including Code of Conduct, Financial Policies, and Youth Protection Protocols.
Registration is OPEN when the Register box below says “Register.” If it is blank, registration is NOT open for this class.
