Volunteer

HRCA requires a dedicated team of adult and youth volunteers to run our programs.

Parents or other background-checked adults can volunteer as classroom or hall monitors, ladder coordinators, fundraising coordinators, tournament directors, scorekeepers, set-up and clean-up crew, or in many other capacities.

Our Youth Leader Development Program is open only to HRCA members in middle school and high school.  These students fill out an application form and complete a Zoom interview.  Selected students then serve one year as assistant coaches, helping our coaching staff manage in-person, virtual, and hybrid classrooms, and occasionally stepping up to teach classes.  They also act as free peer-tutors for students in their classes who are struggling with the concepts and homework.

Other youth volunteers can serve as tournament directors or can work one-on-one (under parental supervision) with our seniors and veterans to teach and play chess with them.  Youth volunteers can help in many other capacities, as well.

HRCA is an official Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Awards.  Each volunteer will be entered into our database and given credit for their hours.  HRCA will present these prestigious awards to our volunteers annually.  Check out the link above for more information.
